Simple. Bulletproof. Purely functional, absolutely purposeful. It has one job to do, and it does it without fail for a half million miles or more. Why have engineers abandoned the beauty of simplicity?

Yes where have all the hot-running, power-sapping, maybe-I’ll-lock-up-maybe-I-won’t torque converter transmissions gone? The AW4 is a decent transmission, but not a good one. It was one of the best ever put into a Jeep, but that’s because every other Jeep auto trans was garbage.

The 545RFE was pretty solid?
and the W5A580 is pretty stout, just expensive to repair if you do manage to break it.

Mine went into the big green wheely bin after the AX-15 took its spot. About the best thing that can be said about the AW4 is that it was durable.

Still better than a BA10/5

The 545RFE was a solid fat pig, and ze Germans fucked up the fill tube design on the W5A580, and torque management to prolong its life made it a slow-shifter.

The BA10/5 is French garbage. Runs hot, shitty shift points, and any application of power would turn it into a grenade. You are absolutely correct.

1) I am fancy-bitchy
2) I had to drive a BA10/5 for 7 years. It was garbage for all of them

They’re probably all in David Tracy’s back yard.

The AW4 is certainly a rugged piece of kit. But I’m not a huge fan. (and I’ve got two of them right now). It doesn’t like being hot but gets that way easily, it shifts sllooooowly, and the torque converter makes it super slushy... it’s almost like driving a CVT. Half-thottle = 3500 rpm, and you just slowly build up speed to catch up.
